Local-To-You Prog Bands/Artists

Hi:

Who's your 'locals' doing prog, semi-prog, ambient or independents who have a real shot at making it big??

For me here in South Florida, there's a few:

Little Atlas - Miami (Signed to ProgRock Records.)
Absolute Zero - Pip Pyle's band based in Coral Gables
Dinosaur Construction Unit - West Palm Beach.
Just Offshore - Ambient amazement from Miami.
Against The Girl - Miami Jazz-Rock.
The Baboons - Miami.  Phenomenal folk-rock with an edge.
Liquid Stone - Cooper City.  Great semi-metal band.

Other parts of Florida are home to Cryptic Vision (Sarasota), Circle II Circle (Tampa) and The Vinyl Kings (Jacksonville).

Cheers!

A few good prog bands from Belgium:

Machiavel: from Jodoigne - first 3-4 albums (70s) influenced by Genesis, Yes and Supertramp with a vocalist sounding like AC/DC's Bon Scott.

Isopoda: from Aalst - first album (70s) very Genesis-like.

Phylter: from Brugge (70s).

A good question  , here are some:

Apocalyptica - moved from covering Metallica and other metal with cellos to their own compositions. Their own compositions are very good as well. For me by far the most interesting Popular tune at this moment is "Bittersweet" - the album version with the grand final. However, the Prog elements are the most interesting part in Apocalyptica for me. They have many albums already - quite successful in Europe but perhaps not really known in US ?

CMX - well, sings in Finnish and perhaps not commercially possible to make it big. In our rock magazine Rumba, they were voted to be the best group of all times. It started a heavy conversation :winkle: , how can that be claimed. But that just tells that they have very dedicated fans. There latest album "Aion" was very respected and popular in here.

Children of Bodom - could make it if they would change their style from Death Metal to Prog Metal. They are very good players. Comes from my home town.

Värttinä - new kind of folk music based on our Carelian tradition. They are composing the music to the theater peace "Lord of the Rings", which will come out in London (this year, I think).

Trio Niskalaukaus - very good, melodic, adult, melancholic metal with meaningful lyrics, dealing with the big things in life (like Serbian death patrols, suicide, son killing himself with drug use). Sings in Finnish and thus perhaps not a commercially possible setup.

Mick -- Sphere3 are a fantastic jazzy-fusion oriented prog band.  If they play live locally, you definitely need to check them out.  I have their album 'Comeuppance' and love every track.

Ganymedes -- Thanks for those bands -- I'm checking into them now.

Peter -- ". . . very talented Sylvan and RPWL."    ----- That's one of the understatements of the past few years.  These two bands have massive amounts of creativity, depth and presence I've ever had the privilege to hear and witness.  If you don't know them, check out the bands Shades Of Dawn, High Wheel and Flying Circus.

Cheers!

You are welcome Walt  .

If you really have not heard of Apocalyptica, I can name a few songs which should rise a few eyebrowns: From Metallica covers: "One", "Nothing Else Matters", "Welcome Home - Sanitarium" and from the others: "Little Drummer Boy", "Oh Holy Night", "Conclusion". They are magnificient live because they are all players from the (classical music) Sibelius Academy in Finland and thus very capable with their instruments.

A lot of excellent bands still exist in Hungary (they are all locals to me).

After Crying - you know them, right? My friend is the new singer (ex-StoneHenge singer)
D-Sound - a relatively new discovery by peripheric, they recently released their 2nd CD
You And I - Sadly defunct, but excellent band
Solaris - Hopefully all you know them
Inkább Holnap - New and talented prog rock band
Fugato - Prog symphonic orchestra
Vedres Csaba - Ex- member of After Crying, now on solo

...and a lot more...

I need to add one group to the list:

Nightwish - they are pretty big in Europe, but might be unknown in US. They had a number one single in many European countries last summer. So it is also popular music and only the secondary aspect is having Prog influences ... so perhaps not exactly what you are looking for. Their style is Melodic Metal. Or maybe it is what you want to know about, because they do have nice songs - well worth a radio play in a prog program, I think. Their lead singer has an opera singer training which adds to the listening enjoyment - also when heard live. You might want to check a song like "Sleeping Sun" to hear what she can do at her best.
